Which Extra Team Should I Play On?

How do you determine a player's age?

AYSO will be transitioning to a school-year registration system beginning with the Fall 2026–2027 season. Under the school-year system, a player’s division is determined by their grade-level cohort, with eligibility based on whether the player is in the age range for that school year’s grade grouping. This means that players who are in the same grade at school will generally play in the same AYSO division, even if their birthdays fall in different months. This updated approach follows the new player-age guidelines adopted by U.S. Soccer and is intended to better align teams with school-based peer groups.

What about Extra Teams formed prior to the 2026–2027 Registration Year?

For teams which were already formed prior to the 2026–2027 Registration Year, AYSO Region 76 is allowing players to remain on the team they have been playing with. This is to retain team cohesion and the benefits of the years they may have already been playing together. This applies to players already assigned to an Extra roster and does not apply to players seeking to make an Extra team for the first time. If a player chooses to try out for a different team they now qualify for, they may at their discretion.

AYSO Region 76 uses the school-year (August 1 – July 31) cutoff for player placement beginning with the Fall 2026–2027 Season.

* Please note: Extra teams in 15U and 16U are not guaranteed. Because these divisions typically have smaller player pools and fewer participating teams across our Section, Region 76 may be unable to form or roster teams at the 15U and/or 16U levels for the season.

Can my player be moved up or down a Divison?

AYSO Extra does not allow move-downs to a division below a player’s age group. We may, on a case-by-case basis, consider move-up requests. Move-ups to the next division are generally allowed when appropriate for the player’s development but must also be reviewed and approved by the Region.
