The Warm Up Poem
This poem was written in response to a suggestion from BU12 parent and inveterate e-mail correspondent, Cindy Trangsrud, that we consider purchasing warm-ups through Manny Fineberg for the Girls Under 19 team going to the National Games in Hawaii in July 2002.
Warming Up For Hawaii
by Michael Karlin (with a tip of the cat hat to Dr. Seuss)
It was sunny and warm out
on Waikiki beach.
It was too hot for moving
No Mai Tai in reach.
We sat on the sand my pals
Emma, Meghan and Sandy
AJ and Anjuli
Jane, Nick and Miranda
Our faces were blazing,
Our ears were aglow,
Our bodies on fire
From head down to toe
Both right leg and left leg
were turning deep red.
We thought, "What we all need
is warm-ups instead."
But where can we find those
cool outfits to wear,
to cover our bods with
just navels left bare?
We lay out on the strand
Getting redder and redder
Rays working full blast
Like an Andersen shredder
“I figured it all out,”
I cried out to Emma,
“What we need is the TRANGSRUD
To solve this dilemma.”
“The TRANGSRUD we know
will soon set us straight,
we simply must find her
before it’s too late.”
“Who knows where she might be?”
We each asked the other,
“We need to get hold of
The world’s best team mother.”
Then Jane put her hand up
“I’ve a plan that won’t fail
Let's log on to Yahoo
And send her e-mail!”
So soon we were hunting
and pecking away,
on line at the outdoor
Oahu Café
“Help, help!” was our message
to her e-mail address
“Please, help us, oh TRANGSRUD,
to deal with this mess.”
And then, it was magic,
a voice from the ether,
came to our rescue
and gave us a breather.
“I can offer you succor
for scorched thighs and fanny.
For 84 bucks just
call up my friend Manny.”
“Oh TRANGSRUD!” said we
“This would meet all our needs
except that our budget
this price far exceeds.”
“Ah well,” quoth the TRANGSRUD
“I certainly tried.
I suppose it’s your fate
to be tastefully fried.”
